SPINAL STENOSIS

Spinal stenosis refers to a narrowing of the spinal canal. The spinal canal encloses the spinal cord and provides bony protection. This narrowing is caused by degenerative changes in the vertebral joints, leading to the formation of bony outgrowths (spondylophytes). Another cause is the thickening of the ligaments located between the vertebrae.

The intervertebral disc can also bulge or even herniate, causing stenosis. A narrowing can also be congenital; often, both factors are combined. This constriction causes the nerves running within the spinal canal or the exiting nerves to have progressively less space and even become compressed. A consequence is chronic back pain, which can also radiate into the arms and legs.

Paralysis symptoms and neurogenic claudication are also possible. In cases of non-bony stenosis, treatment on the SpineMED® Table can provide significant relief and improve quality of life.
